4pm at Brooking Church. Our annual inter-spiritual, contemplative Christ and Yuletide-Tingle, featuring both local apples and more traditional oranges… and lots of candles! This is a simple and short service blending silence and a few carols – both Christian & Pagan. On this most magical night, come and join us for a quietly joyful celebration of the return of the light on Christmas Eve. All welcome!

The gathering is crafted from previous years’ gatherings and combines our previous Christmas Eve, midnight, darkness meditation and our Midwinter-Tingel. So it contains elements of both of these celebrations: we start with a time of silence (10-15 minutes) and peace, as we sit in stillness within the beautiful dark of Brooking Church, to really soak up the restfulness of sacred darkness within what can be a very busy time of the year.

Then a candle flame is kindled and carried from the eastern sanctuary, along with a small carving of the Christ child, symbolic of the return of the light and new beginnings. This is placed in the cradle to complete our nativity scene on this night that remembers the birth of Christ. The light is brought to our Lady Chapel where we pass it hand to hand as we light our Christ or Yuletide Tingles. We close by singing carols together – with the option to choose your own favourite. Weather permitting, we may finish around our campfire with a cup of mulled cider!

Brooking Church is on the Number 80 bus route, with a request stop ‘Tigley Cross’ at the end of church drive. There is free car parking in front of the church for drivers. Please note, this is a rural church and there is very little artificial light (great for bats & star gazing!) So please bring a torch… and a hot water bottle and a blanket. Please arrive promptly to help hold the contemplative space. Donations are invited to cover costs & church upkeep, either by cash on the day or online here. Thank you!
